Dental Habits You Need To Break

Here is one dental habit that you must break before it’s too late

Brushing your teeth too hard is a huge dental habit that you need to put a stop to.

We hear many stories of patients damaging their teeth because they are brushing them too hard. It’s one of the most common mistakes within the world of teeth, as many people assume that brushing your teeth harder will help keep your teeth healthy, but that is not the case.

Also known as ‘toothbrush abrasion’, brushing vigorously can lead to sensitive teeth and receding gums which expose the sensitive root area. Receding gums can also lead to periodontal disease and cavities, potentially causing the need for treatments such as fillings, root canals and tooth extraction.

Enamel is what helps protect your teeth from chewing, biting, crunching and grinding. As teeth are so sensitive without it, everyday tasks become very difficult and this can lead to great pain.

Another problem with vigorous brushing is the technological advancements within toothbrush design. New toothbrushes feature round-headed bristles, which can become blunt as time passes, therefore scratching your teeth whilst in the cleaning process. Brushing your teeth with force exemplifies this issue, sometimes causing irreplaceable damage, which is another reason why you must put a stop to brushing with force.

Here at Roy Morris Dental, we provide expert advice and treatment for people of all ages who have been affected by vigorous brushing and the effects it can cause.
